About Us
January 2012
Happy New Year! Deaf Boomers is looking forward to making strong progress in 2012. Deaf Boomers, along with their senior care partner, The Kemper Company, is very excited at the outcome of the recent ULI Study at Gallaudet University. Herb Sutcliffe, Deaf Boomers VP, participated in the study to voice the strong demand for Deaf Senior Housing. The proposed Deaf Senior Community, Gally Circle, is in line with ULI’s findings and recommendations for Capital City Market, which brings us one step closer to initiating development. We remain in close communication with Gallaudet as they move through this process, and will convey updates as they become available.

March 2011
Deaf Boomers, along with Kemper Company, presented Deaf Senior Community proposal to Gallaudet University to build on their land within Capital City Market. After two years of planning and research, a 50-page proposal was created outlining every facet of the community - Gally Circle. This included financing, market studies, competitive analysis and University benefits. Deaf Boomers awaits Gallaudet University's decision to allow this community planning to move forward and encourages Deaf seniors and friends to let Gallaudet know of your support for this project.

June 2010
Deaf Boomers has added two strong resources in their pursuit of Senior Housing for the Deaf in the Washington DC area - Clark Construction and WDG Architecture. Clark is currently ranked the eleventh largest general contractor in the nation with an annual volume in excess of $4 billion. Clark has extensive experience and a strong reputation, with many high profile projects throughout DC (and country) including Nationals Park, Verizon Center, Smithsonian and Dulles Airport.

As for WDG, the firm was founded in 1938 and has produced over 450 major buildings, including commercial, multifamily residential, hospitality and mixed-use projects.  Further, WDG has a working relationship with Dangermond Keane, a specialized architecture firm that help develop Deaf Design principles alongside Gallaudet University and Hansel Bauman Architecture. With WDG and Dangermond Keane’s assistance, this community will incorporate all the latest hi-tech features, along with design elements to enhance the Deaf lifestyle.

"We are very excited to have partnered with Deaf Boomers on this historic and important project, which will create such a positive community for Deaf seniors", stated Mike Alto, Senior Vice President of Clark Construction. "This is such a thrilling venture to design not only a building but create a community for a group of seniors that have such a strong bond", added WDG Director of Senior Living, David Blanta.

One aspect that still remains is finalizing the location. Deaf Boomers continues to meet with Gallaudet University to build the community adjacent to the campus, Capital City Market, but also looking at alternate locations throughout the area. “Deaf Boomers vision is that this complex will not only house Deaf seniors, but will be a central gathering place for all area Deaf and Hard of Hearing”, stated Herb Sutcliffe, Deaf Boomers VP. Once the location is finalized, we will be that much closer to realizing this long-awaited goal of Deaf senior housing.

October, 2009
Deaf Boomers has been in talks with Gallaudet University to build a community for Deaf seniors adjacent to the university, within the Capital City Market. The area is currently under redevelopment, which we believe will initiate the development and lead the integration of deaf culture into the neighborhood. Once completed, the area will be vibrant with activity, with shopping, restaurants, theater and more. Please note that this is currently in the exploratory and planning phase with Gallaudet, but will continue to work with them to ensure the community meets everyone’s needs.
